Cricket in Nepal: Are we on the right way?

In Nepal, before it was just about playing the National tournaments but in recent years cricket has been a lot changed in domestic level. The tournaments like Nepal Premier League (NPL), Ruslan Cup and Sudur Pashchimanchal Academy Cup (SPA Cup) had helped to initiate towards the change and the upcoming tournaments like Dhanghadi Premier League (DPL), U-16 Nexus Cup and United Attariya Sports Club announced Womens Cricket Tournament will surely help to rise the new talented youngsters.

The players (seniors and juniors) will be testing each other patience and hardwork in these tournaments through their talent. In these type of tournaments, youngsters will gain the experience from senior members but what about senior players? Saying “Talent has no boundaries and even youngsters may have better skills than senior members and they can learn from our them too” seems unfair after certain point. Youngsters will surely gain much more but seniors will lose the ability to play at big stage. Playing at the same condition since many years and facing same bowlers again and again and knowing eachother weakness so well, will grow their talent to play against big other Nations outside the home ground?

Letzcricket.com Team is not comparing about the better infrastructure that Afghanistan Cricket has but we (Nepal) must be inspired and act accordingly, after seeing the height that Afghanistan Cricket has achieved in this short interval of time, even after being started late than Nepal. Not a targeted statement to any player “some regular member of player quick fires in domestic cricket tournament” but fails to perform when they play for National Cricket Team. We need more match practice outside at different conditions against better bowlers and batsman in regular interval rather than playing against the same in each domestic tournament.

It’s really appreciable the way domestic cricket has evolved in past few years in Nepal. But, we should not forget that most of the initiative in domestic cricket has been made from private sector and not the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN). Nepali team has the potential to perform against top level teams. Our players just need more matches to play. Perhaps, we can arrange bilateral series with teams like Afghanistan, Hong kong, Kenya or Namibia. We can’t completely depend upon domestic cricket for better performances in international level. The quality of cricket in international is very high and we got to catch up with that if we want to play in the top level.

We have talented players but Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) is doing injustice to the talents. So the real question is, “is this enough?”
