England defeated India by 31 runs in the first test at Birmingham to take a 1-0 lead in the 5 match series. Chasing 194 runs to win in the fourth innings of the match, India were bundled out for 162 runs.
Earlier, India had scored 274 in their first innings in reply to England’s 287 in the first innings. India were 13 runs behind England in the first innings. England could manage 180 runs in their second innings as India had to chase 194 runs to win the match.
Skipper Virat Kohli scored a half century for India which was not enough to guide his team to victory. Hardik Pandya was the second highest scorer with 31 runs while Dinesh Karthik scored 20 runs. Ben Stokes was the pick of the bowlers for England in the fourth innings as he finished with the figures of 4-40. James Anderson and Stuart Broad shared 2 wickets each for England.
Man of the match Sam Curran said after the match : “I can’t take it all at the moment. It is all very special and feels like a dream. Just couldn’t get any sleep last night. Obviously when Jimmy took Karthik out first up it gave us a lot of confidence.”
