Exclusive interview: Sita Rana Magar

Born on 5th march 1992, Sita Rana Magar is a left arm medium fast bowler and left arm batsman for Nepal Women Cricket Team. She had been crucial in the recently concluded Womens World Cup Asia qualifier where Nepal finished as the runners up qualifying for the Asia Cup to be held late this 2016. She took 7 wickets overall with the best of 3/16 against China Women in the Asian Qualifiers.

Letzcricket (Dipesh Pandit) had a conversation with her and here’s some part of the conversation:

Q: How was the Asian Qualifier so far?

A: Well, I should say the tournament was fruitful. We had less practice but we could manage to qualify for the Asia cup being the runners up.

Q: How was the feeling for making the whole nation proud?

A: To play for country means representing the whole nation with pride. When we manage to produce results and make our nation proud, literally we don’t find words to describe the feelings.

Q: Who inspires you to play cricket?

A: I am very thankful to my mom, her support has always been there for me to play cricket. And Gyanendra dai as well. I want to thank both of them.

Q: So your family seems supportive, any proud moments you remember?

A: (laughs) Yes, one day my mom sold her golden ring to buy me my cricket kit.

Q: How is the support for women cricket team? Can you survive by just playing cricket for your country?

A: Cricket, that too Women Cricket. You can feel it. Some are really supportive but we are not getting support as much we need. Except five women national cricketers, other still have to depend on their family. You know how it feels to play for your country like that. Still, the passion has not ended for cricket. We’ve produced the result, we’ve shown our caliber, it’s time corporate sectors also need to approach women cricket team as well.

Q: What do you want to say about the exposure to womens team?

A: We are always playing with ourselves. (laughs) We know each of us very well, practicing at the same pitch. It would be better if we could get chance to play in new pitch conditions, different teams in foreign conditions.

Q: If you could dedicate this tournament, Whom would you dedicate?

A: We still remember, when we wanted a tournament and wanted some support, some people said “Don’t come to us with women tournament. It’s better to support local men cricket than women”. This result is to them, who did not believe in us. We have ability to play cricket and we proved it.

Q: What will be your aim in the upcoming Asia Cup?

A: We will give our 100% and play with our full strength. We would love to beat big test nations, atleast Srilanka and Bangladesh.

Q: Lastly, what do you want to say to your fans?

A: Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for providing us such energy. You’ve always been supportive to us when others did not believe in us. Lots of love, keep supporting us in our highs and lows. Thank you

Letzcricket team wants to thank her and wish her best of luck for the upcoming Asia Cup.
